Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water (110°F/43°C), sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough: Add melted butter, salt, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir well until combined. Gradually add remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, stirring until a soft dough forms that pulls away from the bowl.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead with a stand mixer dough hook on medium speed for 6-7 minutes.
  4. First rise: Lightly oil a mixing bowl and place dough inside, turning to coat. Cover with kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1 ½ hours until doubled in size.
