crispy air fryer grilled cheese - featured image

A quick and easy grilled cheese sandwich made in the air fryer for a perfectly crispy, buttery crust and gooey melted cheese inside. Ideal for a comforting snack or meal with minimal mess.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices white or whole wheat sandwich bread (preferably thick-cut)
  • 23 slices sharp cheddar cheese (or American, Gruyère, mozzarella)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • Optional: pinch of garlic powder or smoked paprika mixed into butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (190°C) and warm for about 3 minutes.
  2. Spread about 1/2 tablespoon of softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. Optionally, mix a pinch of garlic powder into the butter before spreading.
  3. Place cheese slices on the unbuttered side of one bread slice. Top with the second slice, buttered side facing out.
  4. Place the sandwich carefully into the air fryer basket. Cook for 4-5 minutes.
  5. Using tongs, flip the sandwich and cook for another 3-4 minutes until golden and cheese is melted.
  6. If needed, add an extra minute per side for desired crispness, but avoid overcooking.
  7. Let the sandwich rest for about 1 minute before slicing to allow cheese to settle.

Notes

Use softened butter for even spreading to avoid tearing bread. Preheat the air fryer for best crispness. Flip sandwich carefully with tongs to keep bread intact. Adjust cooking time based on your air fryer model. Lightly spray air fryer basket with non-stick spray if sticking occurs. For dairy-free or gluten-free options, substitute butter and bread accordingly.
