These soft and fluffy homemade flour tortillas are quick and easy to make, perfect for taco nights, wraps, or snacks. They puff up beautifully with a tender texture and golden spots.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted lard
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups (250 g) of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1 teaspoon salt.
  2. Pour in 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil or melted lard and mix into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add 3/4 cup (180 ml) of warm water, stirring until the dough starts to come together. Adjust with more water or flour if needed.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a ball.
  7. Lightly flour your surface and rolling pin, then roll each ball into a thin circle about 6-8 inches in diameter.
  8. Heat a cast iron skillet or heavy non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  9. Cook each tortilla for 30-45 seconds until bubbles form, then flip and cook the other side for about 30 seconds until golden spots appear and the tortilla puffs slightly.
  10. Stack cooked tortillas on a plate and cover with a towel to keep warm and soft until serving.

Notes

Resting the dough is essential for soft tortillas. Use warm water, not hot, to avoid cooking the fat prematurely. Do not press down on tortillas while cooking to allow puffing. Stack and cover tortillas immediately after cooking to keep them soft.
