These black cat Oreo truffle cookies are a no-bake Halloween treat with a fudgy Oreo-cream cheese center and a crisp dark chocolate shell, decorated to look like adorable black cats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14.3 ounces) regular Oreo cookies
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 12 ounces dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening
  • Candy eyes
  • Black sanding sugar or black sprinkles (optional)
  • Black licorice strings or black decorating icing

Instructions

  1. Crush the Oreos: Place the entire package of Oreos (filling and all) into a food processor. Pulse until you have fine, sand-like crumbs (about 30 seconds). Alternatively, crush by hand in a zip-top bag with a rolling pin.
  2. Make the truffle mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the Oreo crumbs with softened cream cheese, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix with a spatula or your hands until fully incorporated. The mixture should look like dark, fudgy cookie dough and hold together when pressed.
  3. Form the truffle balls: Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, portion out the mixture and roll into smooth balls about 1 inch in diameter. Place each ball on a parchment-lined baking sheet. You should get about 24 truffles. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Melt the chocolate: While the truffles are chilling, combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until completely smooth and melted. Be careful not to overheat.
  5. Dip the truffles: Remove the chilled truffle balls from the refrigerator. Using a fork, gently lower one truffle into the melted chocolate. Roll to coat completely, then lift out and tap the fork gently on the edge of the bowl to let excess chocolate drip off. Place the coated truffle back on the parchment paper. Repeat with remaining truffles.
  6. Decorate the black cats: While the chocolate is still wet, attach two candy eyes to each truffle. Use black decorating icing or melted chocolate to draw small triangular ears on top and three tiny whiskers on each side. If using black sanding sugar, sprinkle it over the truffles before the chocolate sets. Work quickly.
  7. Let them set: Place the decorated truffles back in the refrigerator for another 15-20 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm. Serve cold.

Notes

Keep your hands cold when rolling truffle balls to prevent stickiness. Do not skip the chilling step before dipping. Work in small batches, keeping remaining truffles chilled. If chocolate seizes, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil and stir vigorously. These truffles taste even better after a day in the refrigerator.
