A quick and easy Halloween punch that pleases both kids and adults. One base recipe splits into a kid-friendly bubbly version and a spiked adult version with bourbon or rum, featuring a spooky dry ice fog effect and gummy worm garnish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups apple cider (sweet, cloudy kind)
  • 2 cups ginger ale (e.g., Canada Dry or Schweppes)
  • 1/2 cup orange juice (fresh squeezed or store-bought)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 star anise (optional)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup bourbon or dark rum (optional, for adult version)
  • Gummy worms (for garnish)
  • Food-grade dry ice (for fog effect)
  • Orange slices or star fruit slices (for floating decorations)
  • Black food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour the water into a large pot and add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Let cook for about 5 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Pour in the apple cider and orange juice. Stir together. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle simmer again. Reduce heat to low and let cook for 2 more minutes.
  3. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl or punch bowl. Carefully pour the hot cider mixture through the strainer to remove the spices. Discard the spices.
  4. Let the strained cider mixture cool at room temperature for about 10 minutes until warm, not hot.
  5. Pour half the warm cider mixture into a separate container for the adult version. Leave the other half in the punch bowl. For the kid-friendly version, gently stir in the ginger ale. For the adult version, stir in the bourbon or rum.
  6. Drop a few gummy worms into each serving bowl. If using dry ice, use tongs to add small pieces (about the size of a walnut) to the punch bowl. Add orange slices or star fruit slices on top.
  7. Serve immediately. Ladle the kid-friendly punch into cups first, then the adult version separately.

Notes

Do not boil the cider; gentle simmering is key. Make the spice base ahead of time and add ginger ale and dry ice just before serving. Dry ice safety: use food-grade dry ice only, handle with tongs, never put directly in individual cups, and do not seal in an airtight container. Chill ginger ale for at least 2 hours before using to maintain fizz. For a non-alcoholic adult version, skip the bourbon and add a splash of vanilla extract and a tablespoon of honey.
