These creepy-cute pretzel rods are dipped in green-tinted white chocolate with almond sliver fingernails, making them the perfect last-minute Halloween treat. Ready in under 20 minutes, they look like you spent hours planning them but come together with just a few simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 standard bag pretzel rods (about 12–16 rods)
  • 12 ounces white chocolate melting wafers (about 2 cups)
  • ¼ cup almond slivers
  • Green gel food coloring (optional, but recommended)
  • Parchment paper or wax paper

Instructions

  1. Prep your workspace: Line a baking sheet or large plate with parchment paper. Set it somewhere flat where it won’t be disturbed. I usually put mine in the fridge to speed up the setting time, so make sure it fits.
  2. Melt the white chocolate: Place your white chocolate melting wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval. It usually takes about 60-90 seconds total. Stir until smooth and completely melted. Don’t overheat it, or the chocolate will seize up and get grainy. If it looks thick, add a teaspoon of coconut oil and stir.
  3. Add the green color: If you’re using food coloring, add one drop of green gel to the melted white chocolate. Stir until the color is evenly distributed. You want a pale, sickly green—think witch skin, not lime Jell-O. Add another drop if needed, but go slowly.
  4. Dip the pretzel rods: Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip the other end into the melted chocolate. Twist it slightly as you pull it out to coat about two-thirds of the pretzel. Let the excess chocolate drip back into the bowl for a few seconds. You want a thick, even coating, not a thin skim coat. Place the dipped pretzel on the parchment paper.
  5. Add the fingernails: While the chocolate is still wet, press an almond sliver into the tip of the pretzel at a slight angle. The pointed end of the almond should stick out past the pretzel tip, like a fingernail extending past a finger. Press gently so it stays in place. Use a toothpick to adjust the position if needed. Repeat for all the pretzels.
  6. Let them set: Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm. If you’re in a hurry, you can leave them at room temperature for about 20 minutes. The chocolate should be hard and not sticky to the touch.
  7. Add the final creepy details: Once the chocolate is set, you can add a small dab of chocolate at the base of the almond to look like cuticle skin. Use a toothpick to dab a tiny amount of leftover melted chocolate right where the almond meets the pretzel. It adds that extra gross factor that kids love.

Notes

Work quickly once the chocolate is melted as it starts to thicken as it cools. If the chocolate gets too thick, pop it back in the microwave for 10 seconds. Don’t worry if the chocolate drips or looks messy—witch fingers are supposed to look gnarly. The imperfections actually make them look more realistic. If an almond sliver falls off, just press it back on and hold it for a few seconds. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. Let come to room temperature for 10-15 minutes before serving.
