Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe avocados (medium to large)
  • 1 medium lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1 medium Roma tomato, seeded and diced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped (plus extra sprigs for hair)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin (optional)
  • 2 black olives, sliced into rounds
  • 1 small carrot, peeled and cut into thin strips
  • 2 small cucumber slices (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro sprigs (6-8 small sprigs)
  • 1/4 red bell pepper, cut into small triangles
  • 1 small piece of cheese or tortilla chip (for nose)
  • Tortilla chips (for serving)
  • Veggie sticks (carrot, celery, cucumber, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Cut each avocado in half lengthwise and remove the pit. Scoop the flesh into a large mixing bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocados to your desired consistency, leaving some small chunks for texture.
  2. Squeeze the lime juice over the mashed avocado immediately to prevent browning. Add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and cumin (if using). Mix until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  3. Fold in the diced red onion, diced Roma tomato, and 1/4 cup chopped cilantro gently with a spatula until evenly distributed. Do not overmix.
  4. Transfer the guacamole to a serving platter. Use a spatula to shape it into a rough rectangle about 6 inches wide and 5 inches tall, rounding the top slightly. Make sure it is about 1 inch thick. If too soft, refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  5. Decorate the face: Place two olive slices for the eyes (add cucumber slices first if using). Add a triangular chip or cheese piece for the nose. Arrange thin carrot strips in a zigzag pattern for the mouth. Add red bell pepper triangles on each side of the neck for bolts. Press cilantro sprigs into the top for hair.
  6. Step back and adjust any features. Reshape edges if needed. Serve immediately with tortilla chips and veggie sticks arranged around the platter.

Notes

For best texture, use avocados that are ripe but still firm. Chill avocados before using for better shape retention. If making ahead, prepare guacamole base but do not shape; press plastic wrap directly onto surface and refrigerate. Shape and decorate just before serving. Do not add tomato seeds as they release water and make guacamole runny.
