Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process recommended)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • Black licorice strings or pretzel sticks (for spider legs)
  • Candy eyes (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla: Crack the egg into the bowl and add the vanilla. Stir until fully combined.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Combine wet and dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. The dough will be thick and fudgy.
  5. Chill the dough: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Scoop and roll: Using a tablespoon or small cookie scoop, portion out the dough into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  8. Optional: Roll in powdered sugar for extra crackle.
  9. Bake: Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Cookies should look puffed and set around the edges but still soft in the center.
  10. Cool completely: Let cookies sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. Cool completely before decorating.
  11. Make the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, until the glaze is thick but flows slowly off the spoon.
  12. Fill a piping bag: Spoon the glaze into a small piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip off a tiny corner (about 1/8 inch wide).
  13. Pipe a spiral: On each cooled cookie, pipe a spiral of glaze starting from the center and working outward (4 to 5 rings).
  14. Drag the web: Immediately after piping, use a toothpick to gently drag from the center of the spiral outward to the edge of the cookie. Repeat 6 to 8 times around the cookie, spacing evenly. Wipe the toothpick clean between drags.
  15. Add the spider: While the glaze is still wet, press two candy eyes onto the center. Break licorice strings or pretzel sticks into 4 pieces each and press them into the glaze to form spider legs (4 on each side).
  16. Let the glaze set: Allow cookies to sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes, or until the glaze is firm.

Notes

Chill the dough thoroughly for at least 30 minutes to prevent spreading. Do not overbake; cookies continue to set as they cool. Test glaze consistency on parchment before piping. Work in small batches (3-4 cookies at a time) to ensure the glaze doesn’t set before dragging. Use a light hand with the toothpick. For best results, let cookies cool completely before decorating.
