These quick and easy apple dumplings use refrigerated crescent rolls and a homemade caramel sauce to create a nostalgic, comforting dessert in under 30 minutes. Perfect for weeknights or when you need a warm, sweet treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent rolls
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Peel the apples, cut each in half from top to bottom, and scoop out the core and seeds from each half. Pat dry with a paper towel.
  3. In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
  4. Unroll crescent roll dough on a clean surface. If using perforated dough, press seams together to form four rectangles. If using seamless sheets, cut into four equal rectangles.
  5. Place one apple half, cut side up, in the center of each dough rectangle. Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of cinnamon sugar mixture into the hollow and over the apple. Bring corners of dough up over the apple and pinch together at the top. Place seam side down in the prepared dish.
  6. Brush or drizzle melted butter over the tops of the dumplings.
  7. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, ¼ cup butter, and heavy cream. Stir constantly until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved (about 2-3 minutes). Let come to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla and a pinch of salt. Pour sauce evenly over and around the dumplings.
  8. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until dough is golden brown and caramel is bubbly. Apples should be tender when pierced with a fork.
  9. Let cool in the dish for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Don’t skip the 5-minute rest after baking—it allows the caramel to thicken. For best results, use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. If using regular crescent rolls, pinch seams together before wrapping. The caramel sauce can be made in the microwave in 30-second increments if you don’t have a saucepan.
